History of NewsTalk

Newstalk was created on DALnet by Hondo on Friday 9th August 2000 and has steadily grown since that day. However, it was not until it was entered into the 5.82 version of mirc on 26th April 2001 that people became aware of what a great place it was to be.

With the demise of DALnet Hondo applied to register #NewsTalk on the Undernet Channel posting the application on January 19 2003 and it is on the Undernet where we settled.

Hondo has been a great inspiration and driving force and it is his tireless efforts that have made NewsTalk the place it is today. One could not ask for a better founder.

So as you can see, Newstalk has two very special days to celebrate and celebrate we will!

The Essence of NewsTalk

What makes NewsTalk a place to revisit? We believe that the essence and strength of NewsTalk is the fact that we are friends first, debaters second, and from all over the world talking about news third. Regardless of where you on the topics of day-to-day "news", this channel is a place that friend and foe can discuss the issues and where one can exchange ideas, concepts, experiences and opinions.

Here you will be able to find at least one fellow comrade to share your opinions whether it is about country or politics and even religion. This is what makes us unique. We are prepared to listen. This does not mean we will agree, but we firmly believe that everyone has a right to be heard.

These qualities make for some lively, spirited debates, after all we cannot agree about everything all of the time. But what makes us special is that however heated the discussion gets we "go home friends".

Although 'news' is the main theme of the room the diversity of topics is immense and the emphasis is not so much about voicing opinion, but more about meeting new people, making new friends and in the process have a whole heap of fun.

Individualism and respect echo through our chambers and these theologies are promoted and reinforced as necessary. Our philosophy is grounded in respect and individualism and this is reflected in the room itself. We strive towards making this a place where all feel welcome and a part of the NewsTalk family.

Here in NewsTalk you will find opportunities to discuss, analysis, theorize, reflect or simply just to socialize. The essence of our philosophy is evident in the free flow of the discussion and exchange of ideas that happen. There are no confines after all diversity and experiences make mirc a fascinating place to be.

Hondo is our driving force and together with the passion that he inspires in us all, we continually strive to make this a special place to be.

Philosophy

Here in #Newstalk we believe in the concepts of individualism: the individual opinion and in the individual right to express diversity. We recognize the uniqueness of every person that steps into our room and as such the emphasis is upon respect, appreciation and acceptance of the beliefs and ideologies of that person at a political, social, cultural and spiritual level.

It is acknowledged that people display extremes of knowledge and experiences, which, through the power of the medium of irc enhances the social process. Exchanges of ideas, concepts, experiences and opinions contributes towards the self-growth, learning and development of the individual. Interaction, fuelled by critical thinking, is paramount in building and constructing meaningful theories and hypothesis's, which can be challenged and discussed. All of which empowers us with knowledge and understanding the strongest tool we have.

We are part of a great historic event in human history. People from all over the world are talking with one another without the need for politicians or media to interpret "What the people think." We the People can now say it out loud, in public without fear of retribution of any kind.

Newstalk provides opportunities for discussion, analysis, theorization, reflection and socialization, the essence of which comes out through the exchange of ideologies and working together in a flexible, tolerant environment.

We strive to provide a safe, friendly environment in which to chat. Our aim is to protect the individual from abuse and personal attacks and to ensure and encourage the free flow of discussion in the room whilst promoting a civilized and harmonious atmosphere.

We respect you as an individual and all who enter our doors. Fair, unbiased decisions will be given although in all judgments you cannot please all the people all the time. It is a learning experience for us all and we learn from our mistakes. In such times we are strong enough to admit our errors and say `sorry`.
